Cameron Reilly pointed out this new online bookseller in the UK called www.bookdepository.co.uk. It looks like it is aiming to be a direct Amazon competitor (all the prices of books are quoted alongside the Amazon price to show you how much you’re saving). The main differentiator is that the bookdepository includes worldwide delivery for free in all its book prices. It’s a great sales technique. Prices on Amazon usually look great for Aussie book buyers but the freight costs often make these perceived savings irrelevant.
So how does buying an ebook from bookdepository.co.uk compare with buying an ebook from Dymocks?
Well I picked one book so this may be completely unrepresentative but here goes. The Secret is the only listed bestseller on the Dymocks digital bookstore and it costs AU$18.95 in Adobe pdf format. The same book on bookdepository.co.uk costs £7.56 (AU$16.37) which includes postage from the UK. That’s right, the printed version of the book is over 10% cheaper than the digital version even though it has to be physically printed and shipped to the other side of the world.
When Dymocks adds another bestseller to its catalogue I’ll do the comparison again. Until then I think we can safely say that Dymocks ebook prices are laughable.
